Understanding Your Medicare Options

Medicare Part A – Hospital Insurance

  • Coverage: Part A helps cover inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Costs: Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. However, there are costs like deductibles and coinsurance for services.

Medicare Part B – Medical Insurance

  • Coverage: Part B helps cover certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Costs: You pay a monthly premium for Part B. The standard premium amount can vary based on your income. There are also costs like deductibles and coinsurance for services.

Together, Part A and Part B make up Original Medicare, which provides a foundation of coverage for healthcare services. However, they don’t cover everything, which is why some individuals choose to add Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans or Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans for additional coverage.

Medicare Advantage Plans, also known as “Part C” or “MA Plans,” provide an all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare. These plans are offered by private companies that are approved by Medicare. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you still retain your Medicare benefits. These comprehensive plans bundle together Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance), Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance), and typically include Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage).

Medicare Supplement plan, also known as Medigap, is additional insurance you can purchase from private insurance companies to help cover some of the costs that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn’t cover. These costs can include copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. You pay a monthly premium for your Medigap policy in addition to the Part B premium. The cost of Medigap policies can vary depending on the plan and the insurance company. To buy a Medigap policy, you generally need to have Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). Medigap policies do not work with Medicare Advantage plans.

Medigap plans are designed to fill the “gaps” in Original Medicare coverage, providing you with more comprehensive protection against healthcare costs.
