A Good Business Problem; A True Business Risk

by | Mar 10, 2016 | Business Risk

I seem to be having the same conversation over and over again these days.  I have had it before.  I have had it in some pockets of industries all along.  Today, I seem to be having it with everyone I meet.  “I just can’t find good help!”

“I just can’t find good help!”

I know the feeling!  I don’t want to turn this into a hiring discussion for the insurance industry, but what we have experienced is no different than the conversations I have had in contracting, manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, etc.  This is a risk to our business.  We have goals to achieve.  Those goals are largely predicated on our ability to continuously attract, develop and retain tremendous human capital.  Simply, we cannot achieve our goals without great people.

We have great people.  We have GREAT people.  We owe it to those people, our team to continue to find, hire and develop more great people.  Therein lies the rub.  What happens if we don’t hire great people?

What happens if we don’t hire great people?

We don’t grow.  We stress our current staff. We don’t deliver at the level our clients have come to appreciate.  We don’t have the ability to capitalize on industry opportunities.  We lose the ability to perpetuate internally.

None of that sounds very good to me!  So what can we do about this good business problem to have?  Treat this proactively like any other risk in your business.  This is a good problem to have, right?  It means that we are growing or we recognize an opportunity to grow.  But, if we wait until the moment when we realize we need more good help, it may already be too late.

I am not advocating that everyone go out and hire a bunch of people to have them standing on the sideline in hopes that you may grow some day.  I am advocating that you put some thought into your needs for today and tomorrow.  Establish relationships that will result in good people being referred to you.  Reach out to your community and your industry to tell your story.  Develop and cultivate an environment that will attract real people.  Position yourself to be able to grow when the opportunity is there.

This is a business risk at FBinsure.  We are happy to dig into this further with you to understand and plan around your specific needs.  Happy Growth!
